GUILD NEWS

Our Second Outdoor Event

As we are all too painfully aware, current circumstances are such that we cannot hold our normal meetings.  Since the first issue we have held two outdoor events, both at Greenway Park in London, the last on Saturday August 22nd.  These are casual affairs without demonstrations or formal presentations but give us the opportunity to catch up with each other and show what we have been working on.  Dan Thrasher provides an account of the second event below.  To Dan's account, I will add that Geoff was the winner of the "door" prize, a Shinto (Japanese) saw rasp that I donated.

It was a sunny and warm morning so we sat under the shade of some large trees at 10:30 and chatted till 12:30.  Larry drove in from Highgate in his '33 Ford pickup (hot rod), a very sweet ride indeed.  The he told us about his deal of the decade where he purchased the entire contents of a

beginner luthier's shop.  Bodies, back and side sets, fretboards, rosettes, tools, machines, routers ...and the list goes on.  Looks like Larry is going to make the switch from electrics to acoustics.

Pete brought in his neck carving jig and showed us the progress he's made with it. The sample neck blank he just worked on shows just how close to clean and carved this device works. Keep up the great work.

Tony brought in a solid body guitar blank that he had cleaned off all the poly finish from using his CBC machine. No sanding needed when you can remove a thou per pass.

Vitto brought in a one piece solid body guitar blank that looked like ash or alder but was actually a hybrid larch species. I see a long line of electrics coming out of the Orangeville area soon.

Geoff delivered a brief but detailed presentation on the 3 mode tuning for acoustic guitars. His knowledge in this area is sound and clear and probably what keeps guitar repairs and setups coming in. Thanks for the mini lesson.

Dan brought in his Larrivee-inspired O model with roasted curly maple sides and backs. He also showed some recently made copy Eskilstuna chisel handles.

The attendees missed seeing some of the other Guild members but hope that we can all be together soon as plans for the September meeting get underway. Till then, stay safe and keep on building.
